By a mailing list I was strictly refering to a list which you can subscribe to online and send/receive e-mail from/to everyone in the list. Mailing lists also have mail archives which can be accessed depending on the logging scheme.
You could create a mailing list using google and yahoo. There is open source software Mailman which is free software for managing electronic mail discussion and e-newsletter lists. Mailman supports built-in archiving, automatic bounce processing, content filtering, digest delivery, spam filters, and more. See the features page for details.
